Here are some book and album reviews I just wrote to Erin Swanson in an e-mail. I wrote them kind of buzzed. Cold red wine in the evening makes things beautiful. I particularly like these reviews. So I’m putting them in a public place.  Books: (Neither of these are new. But books don’t have to be new to be good, ya know? I don’t care if you’ve read them already. Read them...

LSSU's 36th annual List of Banished Words  →
It’s pretty long. But the best quotes are: On banning the word “epic”: “Standards for using ‘epic’ are so low, even ‘awesome’ is embarrassed.” On banning the acronym “BFF”: “These chicks call each other BFF (Best Friends Forever) and it lasts about 10 minutes. Now there’s BFFA (Best Friends For Awhile), which makes...

I got Netflix for the first time in my life a few days ago. I am quite in love with it. And I don’t know why more people don’t talk about it in their daily lives. Maybe they do and I just haven’t paid attention.  Either way, I want to talk about it a lot. I feel like I went to a garage sale and bought 1,000 movies and TV series for $8. And they’re all in a van out back....

You know what I hate about the world, but now also myself? (3:22 am is a good time for a harangue such as this one. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s not.) I hate the fact that nobody writes anymore. At least not for general audiences. And that’s most probably because nobody reads anymore. This is due to a decision, that I think must’ve been made about 6 months...

This is precisely why we should never survey our work:  Madmen (By Billy Collins)  They say you can jinx a poem if you talk about it before it is done. If you let it out too early, they warn, your poem will fly away, and this time they are absolutely right. Take the night I mentioned to you I wanted to write about the madmen, as the newspapers so blithely call them, who attack art, not in...

To quote Mark Fenske, who quoted Oscar Wilde, “All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.” Here, Billy Collins paraphrases: Introduction to Poetry I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light  like a color slide or press an ear against its hive. I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out, or walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a...

2 situations in life that are purely for show and everybody knows it but we do it anyway and we’re never going to stop doing it: Situation #1: Group of friends goes out for somebody’s birthday. Check arrives. Birthday girl or boy takes out their wallet. Entire group yells at them to put the wallet away. Birthday girl or boy fights with the group. Group throws dinner rolls at him or...

Today at Six Flags Great Adventure I saw 3 poster headlines I really liked. Which is rare for me and the outdoor signage.  While waiting in line for a ride:  “If you think this is a conga line, you’re probably hungry. Snickers Satisfies.”  Coming off a ride:  “If you’ve been waiting in line to ride a lamp post, you’re probably hungry. Snickers...

Dislike. Dislike. →
If Facebook were to add a Dislike button, and brands got mad at Facebook for people disliking their brand, wouldn’t that just be misplaced anger on the part of the brand? People already dislike brands, whether or not Facebook broadcasts it. In fact, if Facebook did add a Dislike button then it might open more brands’ eyes to consumers true opinions about their product. More companies...

Online discount store, Woot.com, has been bought up by Amazon. Half-way point
So, I am coming out of a year of Brandcenter with an addiction to Pho, an inability to sit still, and a decent first year book. Tragically, I didn’t write in this blog nearly as much as I should. Though at 4 am, and buried under 1700 pieces of scrap paper, it never occurred to me. THE THINGS THAT MAKE US GOOD AT ADVERTISING, MAKE US BAD AT LIFE. My art director partner of the adverts...

According to a study of 1.5 million tweets released this year by Oxford University Press, the words “cool,” “awesome,” “wow,” and “yay” are among the most common on Twitter. (via Vanity Fair) No wonder I’m not that into Twitter, it’s for the glitter-huffing, unicorn-hugging optimists.

This is the first time I've seen morning all break
It’s 9:10 AM. I just spent the entire night tossing and turning in this half asleep half awake state of hallucinogenic psychosis. See, I thought this would be a break full of calm, serene, beautifully peaceful sleep and wake. And it was. For a week. Until Monday whence the concepting started right back up again. So, now for a week I’ve been really frustrated. I’ve gotten...

We're all mad here.
Have you ever had one of those silly mornings where you wake up in a Malaysian Harem house donning lederhosen and spooning a tuba, and you turn to the person wearing the oompa loompa costume to your left, and you politely inquire, “what the fuck happened last night!?!?” That’s sort of how my brain feels. Except in this case it’s, “what the fuck happened in the last 4...

SMART. They should offer this in every language known to man. This is an example of an app. that...
